Save a Life and You Create a World

This past Wednesday I was perhaps the most incredible event that ever happened to me in my dental practice. For those who are reading my blogs for the past few years, or are patients of mine you know that I am in prevention. I think it is more reasonable times, time and cost effective, to take care of yourself, instead of medicine to fix you.

To understand the Wednesday we go back a few weeks, when a physician in my building came into my office and asked to speak to me. He is a patient who has a very high fear of needles and giving blood. They did not have current blood work on this patient for more than three years and he was wondering if I could help with their patients. To nitric oxide might have to be patient through it. I told the doctor I'd be happy to give it a try, but if it is phobic I am not sure it will work.

We set an appointment for this past Wednesday before I started seeing my patients. I met phobic, and we're escorted into one of the treatment rooms and just talked. It was about as negative a potential as possible. But he was willing to give it a try and so was I. At first it did not seem like it was going to work, but after about 15 minutes of nitrous oxide, and turning the music that he likes, my sister was able to draw blood.

There were tears in the eyes of patients, when it was all over. He actually did, he allowed the technology to draw his blood. Now he could be treated effectively. And when he got ready to leave he just gave me a hug. I never ask what the patient's medical problem, but the doctor is a specialist in blood cancers, so I'm guessing that something significant.

I was actually on a high that I had never experienced before. I know deep in my heart of hearts, that when I was a patient understands the importance of home care and the relationship between gum disease to overall health that I was actually affect their health in a positive way. But I never look at it as I have saved that person's life. But on Wednesday I felt like I had done so much more .... I felt like it was a real possibility that I helped save this young man lives.

I was taught as a child that if you save someone's life to create the world elsewhere. Maybe, just maybe, maybe there is another world out there today.

But my day does not end there. You see, later that night I went to the annual kickoff fundraiser for a local YMCA that I am now a member of the administration. I got there a little late so I missed the speech. I did not know that I sat next to a young lady who spoke about what he had done Y to change your life.

Y Hollywood has a residential program that takes young women and gives them the opportunity to learn skills to deal with the world. When it comes to this young lady, I told her about what I learned in sociology when I was in college, that basically are the product of their environment. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but for most people, I found this to be relatively true facts.

How happy was I that I sat down next unless the rules. This young lady has a big brother has 46 years left on 50 years in prison for murder. Her younger brother is in prison his whole life teenager. She never felt comfortable in the band party his friends tried to get her to go.

Today, she lives at the Y, but was interned in a law firm and want to try and intern at another law firm. Her goal is to become immigration lawyer. All I could tell her was that she broke a rule, obtained from the gang life and tries to help herself. And I tell you that she has lost over 100 pounds, and it is part of this program on Y.

So, maybe I started the day with the creation of the world, who knows? But, I ended the day knowing that the YMCA has created a universe of worlds. And I was proud to be a new member of the Board, I was in the right place for me
