Health Diet - How and What to Eat When Coping With Dysphagia



What is Dysphagia?

* sit in an upright position at all times - do not sit on the couch to eat rather than sit in a straight back chair near the dining table

* avoid talking because you will need to concentrate

* eat in a relaxed environment where you can

* Avoid distractions while eating - such as watching television

* Do not mix the liquid-solid food in the mouth [unless instructed to do so your medical team] and eat on the stronger side of your mouth if you have suffered from a stroke

* to help with swallowing may want to try tucking your chin into your chest and bend the body forward a bit [it also helps in preventing food in your airways]

* Make sure the inside of your cheeks after every meal to ensure that no food is a 'hole'

* Do not lie down after meals rather remain seated in an upright position for the next 45 minutes or so
